Young Writers: Do you want to write a story, but you can't think of an idea? Try one of these!
1. It's your birthday party. One of your gifts has no card attached, and you don't know who it's from. You open the gift and find (choose one) . . .
- a hand-drawn map with an X marking a location not far from your house
- a photograph of you hi-fiving someone you've never met
- a magic wand, amulet or ring
- an unsigned letter, warning you to be extremely careful of your best friend
- a Mark 6 lottery ticket for tonight's draw
- a passport with your picture and a different name
- a set of binoculars. When you look through them you see what appears to be a different world
- a bottle labelled "Witches' Brew". . .
2. You are walking along the beach and find a plastic bottle. You pick it up and see a tiny person inside, waving at you . . .
3. You've just returned from a trip two days into the future. You now know that, in two days' time, the school bully will win the Mark 6 lottery. Unless . . .
4. A friendly monster lives next door to you. What does it look like? What does it eat? What does it like to do? Write about the day you first realised your neighbour was a monster . . .
5. You open the door to your bedroom - and find yourself in a place you've never been before . . .
6.. On your way out of the door this morning, your brother handed you your school lunchbox. At lunchtime, you took a big bite of your sandwich, only to find it was filled with garlic and onion, and LOTS of chillies. Write your prankster brother a 'thank you' letter . . .
7. You've babysitted your mum's best friend's kids a few times. Yesterday, they told you a BIG secret. Write about it in your diary (and lock your diary up afterwards!) . . .

Mums and Dads: If your children aren't writing yet, why not help them scrapbook - cut, stick, draw and paint - the things they dream and imagine. Give them prompts to fire up their imagination, e.g. What are the best superpowers / magic spells / mythical creatures (dragons, unicorns, etc.)?
